During my second year of the Master, I have directed my focus on learning and practicing different research methods in design. I have taken the elective ‘Research Methods’ by P. Markopoulos, mainly oriented towards methodologies of qualitative data gathering and analysis, resulting in a paper on the role of social media in our society. Please, find the paper here. After that, I have participated in the module ‘Insight into experimental data’, by J. B. Martens, where the focus was to apply quantitative research analysis on a design problem to help the designer in the selection of the possible direction based on statistical analysis. To see more about the type of analysis done, please find the individual report here. For the quantitative analysis, we have used ILLMO, a program that enables the researcher to find the better distribution and model to analyze the data of the study.
Both the electives have been necessary for the development and the selection of research methods for my Final Master Project. The designer is known as a problem solver. But when it comes to finding the problem, the job of the designer becomes more complex. In fact, as a problem solver, the designer must first work as a problem finder. That is where the role of research in the field of design is essential.
